Our dermatology team can use photorejuvenation treatments to help patients improve their skin texture and appearance for a more youthful look. Dermatology, Laser and Surgery of Carnegie Hill is dedicated to providing excellent medical and cosmetic care to our patients. We offer the latest light technology, including IPL Photofacial treatment and non-ablative laser procedures. Our dermatologists are experienced in the usage of a wide range of lasers to treat medical and cosmetic skin conditions.
WHAT IS AN IPL PHOTOFACIAL?
IPL Photofacials use intense pulsed light (IPL) to treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne scars, broken capillaries, rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles, spider veins, and hyperpigmentation. IPL photorejuvenation is an alternative to laser technology, which can be a more aggressive treatment. IPL treatments can be done anywhere on the body, other than the eyelids.
DO ALL IPL SYSTEMS PERFORM THE SAME FOR PHOTOREJUVENATION IN NYC?
No. Not all IPL technology is equally effective. The photorejuvenation system utilized by Dermatology, Laser and Surgery of Carnegie Hill is the M22™ Universal IPL. This Photofacial system uses Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT) to deliver light energy and provide medical-grade IPL treatment. The M22™ is able to tailor to the condition being treated with computer-enabled filter recognition for enhanced safety and ease of use. The hand piece maximizes patient comfort with continuous contact cooling.
WHAT SKIN CONDITIONS DOES IPL PHOTOREJUVENATION TREAT?
IPL photorejuvenation can be an effective treatment for:
- Lightening and removing sunspots and age spots from the face, neck, chest, and hands
- Lightening and reducing redness
- Lightening and reducing rosacea
- Reducing and removing dilated or broken blood vessels on the face, neck, and chest
- Improving skin texture
- Stimulating collagen
- Reducing pore size
- Reducing oiliness
IS IPL TREATMENT FOR EVERYONE?
Not everyone is a candidate for an IPL Photofacial. Patients who have a sun tan or patients who have deep skin tones are not candidates for IPL, as there is too much risk of hyperpigmentation. A consultation with our dermatologists at Dermatology, Laser & Surgery of Carnegie Hill can determine if IPL photorejuvenation is right for you.
HOW IS IPL PHOTOREJUVENATION TREATMENT PERFORMED?
IPL is performed as an in-office procedure by one of our dermatology providers. The procedure takes about fifteen to sixty minutes. To start, you will be given a protective set of goggles for your eyes during treatment. A cooling gel will be applied to the skin to ease any discomfort. Your doctor will run a handheld device over your skin, pulsing with direct light. You may feel a bit of stinging, but the session is not painful.*
WHAT IS THE POST-IPL CARE?
Following your IPL Photofacial, it’s recommended that the treated area remain moist. Ice packs are recommended to limit swelling and ease any discomfort. It’s common to have a bit of a burning sensation (similar to sunburn) for a few hours after your IPL treatment; aloe and ice packs can help alleviate this. You’ll want to limit your exposure to the sun, wear sunscreen daily, and use the skin care regimen directed by your dermatologist.
HOW MANY IPL PHOTOREJUVENATION TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Most patients respond very well to three treatments, although some require six treatments spaced approximately one month apart from each other. During your consultation at Dermatology, Laser & Surgery of Carnegie Hill, our dermatologists can give you an idea of how many IPL treatments you’ll need to successfully treat you skin care concern.*
WHAT IS RESURFX™ LASER SKIN TREATMENT?
ResurFX™ is a laser skin treatment that helps reduce hyperpigmentation, sunspots, brown spots, mild acne scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks. The ResurFX™ is a non-ablative laser, meaning it emits light energy that is broken into narrow beams; these beams of energy can treat the skin without damaging the surrounding tissue or removing the top layer of skin.*
IS THERE DOWNTIME FOLLOWING RESURFX™ LASER SKIN TREATMENT?
No, ResurFX™ can deliver results without the typical downtime associated with the CO2 or ProFractional laser. Additionally, there is no peeling, oozing, or crusting that is often associated with other non-ablative lasers. The ResurFX™ laser is equipped with continuous contact cooling, so the patient is comfortable during treatment.
HOW DOES LASER SKIN TREATMENT WORK?
The goal of laser resurfacing is to boost collagen production in the dermis (the deep layers of skin where collagen and elastin reside). Laser treatments can accomplish this without creating visible damage on the epidermis (the exposed, outer layer of skin). Getting heat into the skin via laser light is an efficient way to jumpstart collagen building. Heat in the skin stimulates fibroblasts, which are cells that help generate new collagen. The result is a thickening of the dermis which can lead to plumper, younger-looking skin.*
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR LASER SKIN TREATMENT?
People of all skin colors are candidates for laser skin treatment. Laser resurfacing may be right for you if you would like to address one or more of these skin care issues:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Crow’s feet
- Acne scars
- Age spots
- Uneven skin tone
- Sunspots and sun-damaged skin
- Sagging or drooping skin
WILL INSURANCE COVER PHOTOREJUVENATION TREATMENTS?
Insurance coverage varies from one carrier to the next. If you are looking to undergo IPL or ResurFX™ treatment for a cosmetic concern, it’s unlikely that your insurance provider will cover these costs. However, if there’s a medical reason to have photorejuvenation treatment, your insurance carrier may cover this procedure. Please contact our office with any questions you might have. We are happy to check your coverage.
